Update on Neil’s Mk1 (293)
Last month my Mk1-owning ‘Sarf Lan-dan’ mates and I got busy on my supercharged wonder wagon. All went well apart from the hydraulic clutch not playing ball. The troublesome clutch just would not bleed, but Mart refused to be beaten. After a bit of messing and a good pressure bleed, it was all running again.
To top off this bit of dedication from Mart and to celebrate further I got my Bailey Motorsport breather bolted into place. I also got a Sierra Cosworth breather to cope with the highly-strung ’charged engine’s demands.
I requested that it be anodised in a black finish to continue the theme under the bonnet. I’m pleased I did! It fits in a treat while easing my breather issues. I am still unsure whether I want a catch tank or not, I feel an oil cooler will be a wiser purchase.
I have been concerning myself with traction, or more accurately my lack of it. I want some grip out of corners and with a car as funky as my Mk1 an old Escort Turbo ‘box wasn’t going to cut it. I need something that will allow me to leave dirty 11s when I give it a big one from my right foot. Tran-X has the answer –its stock-plated LSDs for the IB5 gearbox.
I am itching to get it fitted and give it a test. It’s a real tool and I think it will make huge positive differences to the drive. At times it feels like I am trying to navigate a rock across a frozen lake. Now I’m getting serious and there is nothing more serious than this differential. All being well, I will have it fitted for next month and begin running in and testing.
Thanks
